Rhode Island Accessory dwellings (R.I. Gen. Laws 45-24-73): what it allows on a lot
Accessory dwellings (R.I. Gen. Laws 45-24-73) is Rhode Island law, and the official source is at webserver.rilegislature.gov.
One accessory dwelling per lot is allowed by right on a residential lot of 20,000 square feet or more, inside the existing footprint of the house, or on an owner occupied lot for a family member with a disability. Towns must allow at least 900 square feet or 60 percent of the house for a studio or one bedroom and 1,200 for two bedrooms.
Whether it applies to one lot turns on where the lot is and what it is zoned; the city, county or state office named in the law decides. Mapped areas are approximate. This is a plain reading of public law with its source, not legal advice.
