Iowa Accessory dwellings (SF 592, Chapter 38 of 2025): what it allows on a lot

Accessory dwellings (SF 592, Chapter 38 of 2025) is Iowa law, and the official source is at legis.iowa.gov.

Every city and county must allow at least one accessory dwelling on the lot of a single family home, up to 1,000 square feet or half the house, whichever is larger, with no extra parking and no rule on who lives in either home. SF 2369 (2026, in force July 1, 2026) leaves unfinished basements out of the size count and limits deed restrictions.

Whether it applies to one lot turns on where the lot is and what it is zoned; the city, county or state office named in the law decides. Mapped areas are approximate. This is a plain reading of public law with its source, not legal advice.
